Transport
Where is Stone County SPCA located?
We are located in south Mississippi
Are the animals located in south Mississippi?
Yes, all of our animals are in foster in south Mississippi
Why do you adopt animals so far from where you are located?
Mississippi has no spay/neuter laws. Many counties (including ours) don’t have county shelters. The community is rural and most of the residents struggle financially and are below the poverty line. Many more animals are dumped and abandoned than there are people in the area who want to adopt. By adopting to areas with much fewer strays, we can find homes for all of them.
Is it possible to meet an animal in person before adopting it?
Yes, but only if you live in south Mississippi. Otherwise, it isn’t feasible. Only animals that are already adopted are transported to other parts of the country. We do offer virtual “meet and greet” video calls and can also text, email, and talk with you on the phone to answer any questions.
Can I talk to someone about an animal that I am interested in before filling out an application?
We can answer a few questions through email, but to talk with an adoption coordinator or a foster, you must fill out an application first.
Why do I have to fill out an application before talking with an adoption coordinator?
Our staff is small and very busy. We feel that if a person is interested enough to fill out the application, then we can take the time to answer all their questions and do our best to find them a new family member. Having an application on file also helps us streamline the whole adoption process.
Do I really need to answer every question on the application?
Yes. All of the questions are asked for a specific reason and we will need all of the answers before moving forward. The application won’t submit unless each question is answered.
If I rent but already know I can have a pet, do I have to list the landlord/management office phone number?
Yes, we have to verify that you can adopt the pet in question. Without this information, we will not be able to process your application.
Will I really need to call my veterinarian to give permission for you to speak with them?
Yes. As mentioned, we have a small staff whose time is very stretched. It does nobody any good for us to call your veterinarian only to be told that they don’t have permission to talk to us. Giving permission beforehand is a good way to ensure that your application is processed as quickly as possible.
What information will you ask my veterinarian?
We are mostly looking to see that you have spayed or neutered your pets, kept them up to date on vaccinations, and provided them with common preventative medications such as heartworm and flea & tick preventative and required vaccinations.
What if I have recently moved or changed veterinarians?
Please provide all veterinarians relevant to your current and past pets for at least the past five years. We need to be able to verify your vet history and sometimes to do that, we need contact multiple vets.
Do you adopt to someone that is under 21 and/or still living with their parents?
Yes, but we need your parents’ contact information and we will also need to know if veterinary records are in your name or theirs. Please have your parents call and give the veterinary office permission to speak with us.
What cities and states do you transport animals to?
Here is a list of the most popular stops:
- Pennsylvania: Harrisburg and Allentown
- Virginia: Wytheville
- Maryland: Hagerstown
- New Jersey: Oakland
- New York: Newburgh and Albany
- Connecticut: Enfield
- Vermont: Brattleboro
The stop closest to you may be in another state. That is okay. These are examples to allow you to see how far you may need to drive to meet the transport. There are predetermined stops in each city.
Can we pick the date and time to meet the transport?
No, the transport typically leaves on a Friday and the stops are scheduled on Saturday and Sunday. The exact date and time is set by the transporters who work hard to coordinate the many steps that are required to safely transport animals to adopters in many different cities. We cannot change our stop locations or times once they are established.
How will we know what time to be at the location for pickup?
A few days before the transport leaves, you will be added to a Whatsapp group for your stop. This will not only give you all the information concerning the address and time of the stop, but allows the drivers to keep you informed of any delays or being ahead of schedule. We recommend installing the Whatsapp as soon as your adoption is finalized if you don’t already have it on your mobile device.
What payment methods do you accept?
You can pay with credit or debit cards. You will receive a secure payment link from our shelter management software which ensures that we never have access to anyone’s information when paying the adoption fee.
How often do transports occur?
At least once a month, and many months there are two transports.
How do we know that your organization is legitimate and this isn’t a scam?
We can be found on GuideStar, an independent nonprofit rating site. Upon request, we can give you our veterinarian’s information and they will also be happy to provide a reference for us.
